PROPHECY

The Messiah would be beaten and spat upon by his enemies.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY

"I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting." Isaiah 50:6.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT

"Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists" Mark 14:65.

PROPHECY

The Messiah's hands and feet would be pierced.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY

"Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and feet." Psalms 22:16.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT

"While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, 'Peace be with you.'  They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.  He said to them, 'Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?  Look at my hands and my feet.  It is I myself!  Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have." Luke 24:36-39.

PROPHECY

The Messiah would die with criminals.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY

"Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors.  For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors." Isaiah 53:12.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT

"Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left." Matthew 27:38.

PROPHECY

The Messiah would be mocked and insulted.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY

"All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads:  'He trusts in the Lord; let the Lord rescue him."

Psalms 22:7.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT

"Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, 'You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself!  Come down from the cross if you are the Son of God!"  In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 'He trusts in God.  Let God rescue him now if he wants him" Matthew 27:39-40,41,43.

PROPHECY

The Messiah would be offered vinegar for His thirst.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY

"They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst." Psalms 69:21.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT

"A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stolk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips." John 19:29.

PROPHECY

His enemies would cast lots for the Messiah's clothes.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY

"They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing." Psalms 22:18.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT

"And they crucified him.  Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get." Mark 15:24.

PROPHECY

None of the Messiah's bones would be broken.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY

"He protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken." Psalms 34:20.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT

"But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs." John 19:33.

PROPHECY

The Messiah would be buried in a rich man's grave.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY

"He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth." Isaiah 53:9.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT

"As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus.  Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.  Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock.  He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away." Matthew 27:57-60.

PROPHECY

The Messiah would be resurrected from the dead.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY

"After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied." Isaiah 53:11.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT

"On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.  The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord." John 20:19-20.

PROPHECY

The Messiah would ascend into Heaven.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY

"When you ascended on high, you led captives in your train; you received gifts from men, even from the rebellious - that you, O Lord God, might dwell there." Psalms 66:18.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT

"When he led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them.  While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven." Luke 24:50-51.

These prophecies were intended for us to see their fulfillment in the person of Jesus Christ.  He spoke clearly about this fact on many occasions.  Jesus said, "You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life.  These are the Scriptures that testify about me" John 5:39.  When Judas betrayed Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus spoke to the armed crowd sent by the chief priests and elders of the Jews.  "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?  Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me.  But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Matthew 26:55-56.  Jesus boldly declares that all the prophecies, all the pictures, all the illustrations in the Old Testament all point to him.  God revealed to the prophets of old that a Savior is coming who would suffer and die.  A King is coming who is going to reign and rule.  As it turns out, it's the same person.  It's Jesus the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God!
